2009 CAPE TOWN TOUR
Each year, in August/September, the second year IHM students go on an educational trip to Cape Town, aptly named the Cape Town Tour. The purpose of the tour is to expose the students to trends and developments in the hospitality industry. Wine tasting and visiting various 5 star establishments opens the eyes of the future leaders in hospitality management as to what competition in the market looks like at the moment.
Students organized the external transport, fundraised and decided upon the itinerary themselves. They were accompanied by three responsible staff members, namely, Isabeau Schoombee (Culinary Science Lecturer), Alroy Taai (Community Development Coordinator) and Juliet Chipumuro (2nd year Coordinator). The accommodation needed to be central and allow easy access to the various venues and therefore the Long Street Backpackers was the preferred accommodation.
The places the students visited included “The Cape Grace,” “Protea Fire and Ice,” “La Med,” “12 Apostles,” “Westin Grand” and “One and Only” Hotels, giving an idea of the finest that Cape Town has to offer in the way of 5 star accommodation. The Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) was a fine example of the power of effective partnerships. Bergkelder, Backsberg and the Goatshed hosted a wine tasting for our students and the spitbraai at Backsberg was one of the highlights of the trip.
A second year student stated, “Those with a passion for what they do held our attention and drew us into the world of hospitality management, someone who inspires others to strive for the attainment of their dreams, which was the highlight of the tour.”
Students visited the venues dressed in their full uniform and gave an impression of professionalism. This also developed a sense of camaraderie amongst the group as people who had never spoken to one another (staff and students alike), finally got the opportunity to develop relationships outside the confines of the campus (an 11 hour bus journey would do that!)
Next year, these three staff members are giving others a turn to enjoy the tour. The days are packed with activities and sights; the schedule is demanding and the days long and exhausting. It is often hard to keep up with the enthusiasm and energy of the youth. Long Street may well be the preferred choice of accommodation, however, it doesn’t allow for a good nights rest. It is yet to be seen if any other establishment’s crop up in preparation for the FIFA World Cup as this could be added to the itinerary for 2010. One thing is for certain, Cape Town will see our students again next year.
Here are some photos of their trip!
