VICTIM SUPPORT CENTRE UP AND RUNNING
The Sunshine Coast Victim Support Centre on the premises of the Port Alfred Police Station has officially opened its doors after 2 years of planning.
Stenden South Africa donated the “Wendy House” which serves as the victim support centre. This was the original concept of our humanitarian students who have since left our shores. However, it remained a priority within the community development department and staff and students have seen the concept through to reality.
Station Commander, Senior Superintendent Lizette Zeelie, stated that students from Stenden will perform some of their assignments at the new unit. Zeelie serves as the chairman of the Rape Survival Support Group, on the committees of the Annerie Safe House for abused children and the Ukulungu-Kwethu Centre for domestic violence victims in Grahamstown.
At the official opening in the courtyard of the police station, Deputy Provincial Commissioner Nomaledi Dlani officially opened the centre. The victim support centre is a valuable asset to our community and a much needed shelter for traumatized victims. Stenden South Africa is the biggest supporter and sponsor according to Zeelie. According to a humanitarian student, it is fulfilling to see our projects come to fruition.
