The ultimate, international, educational experience
The Grand Tour concept of Stenden Holland is based on educational principles derived from Europe. In the early Renaissance (from 1200 AD), when the first universities were established they provided scientific education. Students attended lectures, held discussions, and studied the books. All of this was intended to provide a broad education for young men preparing for an active working life. Yet not all wisdom is derived from books. Wisdom is acquired through experience and by travelling. Travel makes us aware of our own culture and of the culture of others. It opens our eyes and our minds.
A few centuries later (in the 16th, 17th and 18th century) young men would travel around as an addition to their education. They visited the main cities of Europe which were renowned for their rich cultural life. This was often referred to as the "Grand Tour". It was a journey that would take years and that was regarded as a necessary step for a broad, universal education. In those days, the purpose of the Grand Tour was to help young people to become familiar with the customs, values and norms of other people, to start relationships with important people in the international field, to widen one's horizon, to acquire knowledge and to refine one's manners.
Stenden South Africa and Stenden Holland (previously CHN ) support this vision and offers the Grand Tour to its students. We think it is important that students receive a broad, universal education. In the current, growing 'global society', there is a renewed demand for people with a global vision and education.
